Bio
Kevin Monteiro is a powerful advocate for ending life without parole with a compelling personal story. He brings a wealth of experience to the board, both from his professional career and his lived experience.
Currently, Kevin serves as the Programs Manager and House Operator for Accessing Care Recovery Homes in Rhode Island. Prior to this role, he was a Peer Recovery Specialist for Rhode Island CARES (RICARES), where he created and led the "Never Going Back" program. This program was designed to help people work through their problems and find a path out of difficult situations by teaching them to think before they react.
As a formerly incarcerated man who served 30 years, Kevin has a deep understanding of the need to address life without parole and other extreme sentences. He believes that people can and do change. "I know through lived experience... people change," he says, emphasizing that change often comes from simple acts of compassion rather than the justice system itself. "A simple letter can change a person. A letter of love and compassion... People who want to give a condemned man a second chance, that's done with love. It's what changed me." Kevin is a firm believer in the mission of the organization because he knows firsthand that change is possible.
Kevin's personal story of resilience and transformation has been recognized by other organizations as well. His journey was included in the work of The Second Chance Center, Inc., featured on Colorado Public Radio, and shared in a statewide promotional campaign for "Health Matters."
